CARE is deeply alarmed by the sharp escalation of conflict in the Middle East. The conflict is threatening the lives and well-being of millions of people in Lebanon and across the region.
Relief efforts in Lebanon
Lebanon is facing one of the most severe impacts of the growing Middle East crisis, with more than 1.2 million people displaced and shelters stretched nearly to capacity. Renewed airstrikes have forced families to flee.
CARE is supporting Lebanese organisations to provide supplies to the displaced. Our team in Lebanon is assisting those who have been displaced by distributing water, ready-to-eat food, and sanitary products.
Before the conflict was renewed, refugees, most of them fleeing the conflict in Syria, accounted for almost a quarter of the population in Lebanon. Most refugee families live in unfurnished houses, work sites, or tents. CARE works with local authorities to improve water supply and sanitation infrastructure for refugees and host communities, and we meet their most basic and pressing needs, including sustainable livelihood opportunities and economic self-reliance, understanding how emergencies may create or reinforce opportunities for sexual exploitation and abuse of women and girls, and protecting girls’ pathways to education.
Previous response efforts include the aftermath of August 2020, when two explosions in Beirut, Lebanon, left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Years later, the city and its people are still trying to recover.
Escalating conflict in the Middle East puts millions at risk
In many countries, our CARE colleagues and partners are mobilising responses while working under extremely challenging conditions.
Our teams are preparing for further displacement, including potential refugee flows and increased numbers of internally displaced people in the countries affected by this unfolding crisis. This includes coordinated efforts with local partners to pre-position supplies and ensure that cash, food, water, shelter, and other services can be delivered rapidly as needed.
