CARE is a leader within the global movement dedicated to ending poverty. We have become known through nearly 80 years of helping people for our unshakeable commitment to the dignity of all people.
Our mission
CARE works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice.
Our vision
We seek a world of hope, inclusion and social justice, where poverty has been overcome, and all people live with dignity and security.
Our focus
We put women and girls in the centre because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.
Women and girls often bear the brunt of poverty and are often more severely affected by disasters, conflict and other emergencies.
When food is scarce, it is the women who will go without. Girls are more likely than boys to be pulled out of school to work or help around the home. The types of work women tend to perform, are often poorly paid and they are generally the primary carers for children, older people and people who are sick, which is generally not paid at all.
We work in partnership with local communities to provide equal opportunities for women and girls to be educated and to earn an income, gain access to essential resources like food, health care and clean water, and to be able to withstand and recover from the increasing impacts of disasters, conflict and other crises.
How do we define locally led?
Work that is led by the people in or close to the communities where we work. Work that values partnerships with local actors and community organisations where possible. Our own teams and leadership represent the places where we work as much as possible.
How do we define globally scaled?
CARE reaches exponentially more people with deeper impact, beyond CARE’s projects and donor funding. As a global confederation with presence in over 100 countries we have the capacity to respond to emergencies whenever and wherever they occur.
